Lead Developer, Data Warehousing

Do you have the drive to develop the data in the largest Finnish banking & insurance company while making an impact on the daily life of up to millions of customers? Have you led data development teams or distributed agile teams before? If you often find yourself pondering how complex data landscape could be efficiently turned to serve wide sets of business needs, we might have something for you.

We are looking for two Lead Developers to strengthen our Data Warehousing tribe. As a Lead Developer in Data Warehousing area, you will play a key role in producing high-quality data assets for the largest Finnish banking and insurance company. There are several scrum teams participating in the data warehouse development and you support some of them. Our tribe is responsible for both new cloud based and existing data warehousing solutions.

What’s the role like?

You are a technical leader in the Data Warehousing tribe, responsible for developing and maintaining OP’s data warehousing solutions for retail banking and corporate banking business units. Our tribe is a lean and self-organized development organization consisting of all the required roles (e.g. Product Owners, Solution Analysts and Developers) to answer and support the needs of the business units.

Your work is a mix of technical specification and solution architecture and guiding developers, but also performing hands-on implementation work. You lead your teams’ technical development and maintenance work and support, coach, and mentor your developers in solving technical challenges. You define the best practices and industry standards for teams to follow, create the needed guidelines, ensure teams adhere to them, and refine as needed. You are responsible for validating that each implementation meets the qualitative requirements, assessing the impacts of the requirements on the architecture and negotiating with various stakeholders if necessary.

Lead Developer also has a role to ensure that the teams’ work fits into the bigger picture at OP. OP’s analytical data ecosystem consists of the Data Warehouses, an evolving data lake platform and calculation engines. With the help of tech leads and the platform team you make sure that this ecosystem serves the business by delivering the right data to the right consumer at the right time. Lead Developer is responsible for making sure that all the developers in the team understand the architecture target picture and can work towards it.

Our teams are made up of internal employees as well as locally based and offshore vendors. You coordinate and actively guide the work of the whole team, which means using a suite of communication tools to stay connected and keep the teams working in the same direction. This position is located in Helsinki, but like the rest of OP, we work flexibly, combining both office days and remote work. In this role there will be on average two office days per week.

What kind of expertise we are looking for?

You have several years of experience in data solutions and their development, as well as an understanding of data integrations and data pipeline (ETL / ELT) development. These you have gained through hands-on development work from recent past. You have gained experience of leading a team of developers and supporting them in their professional growth. You understand data architecture and know how to translate information needs into technical solutions without jeopardizing the usability for our end-users. At least basic understanding of data warehousing data modeling is essential in your daily work.

Technology-wise, we have a wide range of techs and tools in our use, and we want you to lead the way for utilizing new technologies and tools. Hence, if we should list some of the main techs and tools you will most likely use in your future daily work, those would be, for example: IBM DataStage, Teradata (TPT, BTEQ, Viewpoint, etc), Azure, Databricks, Control-M, GIT, Jenkins, Python, Robot Framework. Any acquired understanding of code generation, metadata management and CI/CD tools is a plus.

We use agile methods in our daily work, so we hope that you are familiar with those, or you have an agile mindset! Your way of working is goal-oriented and analytical; you are good at prioritizing tasks and solution-oriented. Thanks to your communicational and cooperation skills, you have a way to motivate others to participate and create innovative solutions together! You communicate fluently in English and hopefully also in Finnish.

What do we offer you?

We are one of the largest IT companies in Finland, providing customer-facing IT solutions primarily independently from start to finish. As a result, we have thousands of experts in the field, and for example, a coding culture is getting strong within our organization.

We also encourage and help you to further develop yourself as a technical professional. We have the “70/20/10 principle” in use, which enables continuous learning as part of your work. You will also have our OP Tech Academy at your disposal in case you are interested in learning new technologies or methodologies, or why not in honing your skills in your current stack.

You get access to our versatile staff benefits, which include a staff fund as well as staff-based banking, insurance, and loan services. We also offer comprehensive occupational health care, extensive medical expense insurance, and full-time accident insurance. We invest in everyday balance and flexibility as well as offering you lunch, exercise, and cultural benefits and the opportunity for inexpensive vacations in OP vacation shares.
